Online Resources for Science Educators
The Ecological House
Author:
Michael Sach

Description:
This multidisciplinary teaching unit deals with ecological recycling; energy; environment; water. It is a large-scale project in which students from ages 12-18 create several different "stands," perhaps in several classrooms, which can be visited. The audience can actively take part in experiments and demonstrations of phenomena related to energy and ecology.

The tasks will teach students about the Earthís environmental situation and about its water and energy resources, encouraging critical reflection on our use of these resources and how our society deals with them. Along the way, students develop their research abilities, collect data, plan a scientific experiment, etc. They should have an introduction to basic physics and chemistry.

The project has been carried out in its full version over four months in an Italian middle- and high school. It requires considerable preparation. Materials needed include a computer with MS-Powerpont and other low-cost materials like wood, paper, aluminium etc. that can be easily obtained.
