The
teachers workshops, co-ordinated by EMBO as part of
'CEEBT', take place in 9 locations in Europe and Israel
in 2003 and 2004 and target primarily secondary school
biology teachers.

The Workshops
are based around hands-on p ractical
experiments that will give participants an insight into
the techniques used in molecular biology today. In this
way the project aims to widen the scope of biology teachers'
practical resources, and build their confidence to introduce
molecular biology practicals into the school laboratory.
To set the scene in each workshop, participants will
hear a number of scientific talks from scientists active
in laboratory-based research. An exhibition of the latest
and best teaching media (from school texts to CD ROM
and Internet multimedia) will provide an overview of
resources for the classroom and laboratory. Each workshop
will also include sessions discussing the challenges
of integrating more practical work into school-time
learrning, and of addressing ethical and societal aspects
of modern biology and its applications in lessons.
In bringing together teachers nationally and internationally,
the workshops represent a forum for the exchange of
best practice, information and experiences. Policy makers
in the area of education may find them particularly
useful.
The workshops are organised at leading research establishments
by groups of research scientists and support staff.
There is no registration fee.
Since the workshops are designed to complement the other
activities in CEEBT, participants are also invited to
participate in the 'Training
the Trainers' and 'Resource
Centre and Archive' of teaching media. The workshops
will both act as test grounds for novel resources generated
in CEEBT, and should feed CEEBT with new ideas and examples
of the best teaching resources.
The EMBO educational resource database,
and the EMBO Science and Society database are developed
under the EMBO Science & Society Programme to provide
access to teaching resouces and public information on
molecular biology and related disciplines from an international
collection of sources |
